A Guide to Dog-Friendly Beaches in San Diego County

Are you planning a trip to San Diego with your furry friend? Look no further! Our county has plenty of dog-friendly beaches where you can take your pup for a fun-filled day. But before you head out, make sure you're aware of the rules and regulations.

According to the Del Mar website, dogs are allowed off-leash between Labor Day and June 15 north of San Dieguito River, but must be on a leash throughout the year south of the river. Some beaches, such as between Sixth Street and Powerhouse Park, allow dogs on the beach but require them to be on a leash.

It's essential to check online or local signage for seasonal rules, which vary across different locations along the beach. Public restrooms and waste bags are available at the north end entrance of some dog-friendly beaches.

In my opinion, the safer areas for dogs are north and south of San Dieguito River. However, be aware that the water can rise quite a bit during high tide, and I've even seen it come up to my chest in certain spots. When taking your pup to these beaches, it's crucial to watch out for high tide and follow the rules.

For instance, when I took my 8-year-old English bulldog Star to Ocean Beach, we had to be careful not to go into the water too early because dogs are only allowed on most San Diego city beaches after 6 p.m. As we got closer to the sand, Star raised her nose, started smelling the beach, and was pulling me toward the Pacific Ocean.

San Diego County has eight dog-friendly beaches and bays where canines are allowed, along with information on rules, hours, and parking options. With more daylight now and Memorial Day approaching, it's a great time to review local regulations before heading out with your furry friend.

I've taken Star to many beaches in San Diego County since she was a puppy, and she loves the beach almost as much as I do.
